Part 1-Framework

The design for this queen size bed features 3/4" square and 1/2" x 3/4" flat stock. These pieces are assembled using mortise and tenon joinery. Click on the following menu items or scroll down to see the processes invloved in creating this type of traditional joint.

Slit punched hole-Mortise

The photo's below show the creation of one of the most basic connections in hand forged metalwork, the mortise and tenon joint. Using a number of relatively simple tools the smith is able to create an attractive joint that becomes an integral part of the overall design of the piece. The framework for this queen size bed features a number of these joints, both in 3/4" square and in 1/2" x 3/4" flat.

Creating the tenon

The second part of the joint is the tenon, this process is a little easier than the slit punching. The tenons for this bed are just over 7/16" in diameter. and are hot set using an oxy/acetylene torch (not shown).
